Pakistan's summer is unlike anywhere else in the world. From the coastal humidity of Karachi to the scorching dry heat of Lahore and Islamabad, temperatures regularly climb above 42°C between May and September. As an aesthetic physician practising in Islamabad, I see the same skin problems every summer — clogged pores, sudden breakouts, tanning, oiliness, and irritated skin barriers — all caused by one thing: using the wrong routine for the wrong season.
Why Your Winter Routine Fails in Summer
The rich moisturisers, thick creams, and nourishing oils that protected your skin through January and February become your skin's worst enemies in June. Here is what Pakistan's summer heat actually does to your skin:
- Excess sebum production — heat signals your sebaceous glands to produce more oil
- Sweat and pollution combine — clogging pores and triggering breakouts
- UV index hits dangerous levels — regularly 9 to 11 (Very High to Extreme) from April through September
- Dehydration disguised as oiliness — your skin looks oily but is actually dehydrated underneath, causing it to produce even more oil as compensation
- Hyperpigmentation worsens — sun exposure darkens existing acne scars and uneven patches, a particular concern for South Asian skin tones
Once you understand these factors, building the right summer routine becomes straightforward.
Morning Routine (AM)
Gentle Foaming Cleanser
Start your morning with a gentle, foaming or gel-based face wash. In summer, your skin has already accumulated sweat and oil overnight. A good cleanser removes this buildup without stripping your skin's natural moisture barrier.
What to look for: salicylic acid (0.5–2%) if you have oily or acne-prone skin; glycerin or hyaluronic acid for hydration while cleansing. Avoid harsh sulphate-heavy formulas that leave skin feeling tight.
Lightweight Toner (Optional but Helpful)
A hydrating toner helps restore your skin's pH balance after cleansing and prepares it to absorb your serum more effectively. In summer, choose alcohol-free formulas with niacinamide or rose water. Skip this step if your skin feels balanced after cleansing.
Serum — The Power Step
In summer, your serum should do two things: control oil and protect against UV-induced pigmentation. The two best serum ingredients for Pakistani skin in summer:
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, start with the Acze Anti-Acne Serum — formulated specifically for acne-prone skin that flares in summer heat. For dullness and pigmentation, the Auxtin Lightening Serum reverses the hyperpigmentation that worsens with summer sun exposure.
Oil-Free Moisturiser
One of the biggest mistakes I see patients make is skipping moisturiser in summer because their skin feels oily. Please do not skip this step. When your skin is dehydrated, it compensates by producing more oil — making your oiliness worse, not better.
In summer, choose water-based or gel moisturisers with hyaluronic acid or aloe vera. Avoid shea butter, coconut oil, mineral oil, and lanolin — all of these clog pores in heat and humidity. Browse the full skin care range to find what suits your skin type.
Sunscreen — The Most Important Step
I cannot say this strongly enough as a doctor: sunscreen is not optional in a Pakistani summer. Pakistan's UV index between May and August is classified as Extreme. This causes accelerated skin ageing, worsening of hyperpigmentation and acne scars, and tanning that takes months to reverse.
Look for: SPF 50 or higher, broad spectrum, matte or aqueous gel finish, non-comedogenic, water and sweat resistant. Apply as the last step of your morning routine — at least 15 minutes before sun exposure — and reapply every 2 hours if outdoors.
Evening Routine (PM)
Double Cleanse
After a full day of sunscreen, sweat, pollution, and oil, a single cleanse is often not enough. Start with a micellar water or gentle cleansing oil to dissolve sunscreen and surface buildup, then follow with the Acure Acne Facewash to deep clean the pores. This two-step process ensures your skin is truly clean before you apply your night treatments.
Treatment Serum
For acne-prone summer skin, the Acze Anti-Acne Serum applied in the evening helps control overnight oil production and fades marks left by daytime breakouts. For tanning or uneven skin tone, the Auxtin Lightening Serum can visibly improve pigmentation over 4 to 6 weeks.
For targeted spot treatment, apply the Acure Acne Gel directly onto active breakouts overnight.
Night Moisturiser
Your evening moisturiser can be slightly richer than your daytime formula, but in summer it should still be lightweight. A water-based gel with ceramides or hyaluronic acid repairs your skin barrier overnight without causing congestion. Avoid heavy night creams with thick oils — these trap heat and worsen breakouts.
Summer Skincare by Skin Type
| Skin Type | Key Concerns | Recommended Products |
|---|---|---|
| Oily / Acne-prone | Excess shine, breakouts, clogged pores | Acure Facewash + Acze Serum |
| Hyperpigmented | Tanning, dark spots, uneven tone | Auxtin Serum + Anti UV Cream |
| Combination | Oily T-zone, dry cheeks | Acure Acne Gel + Anti UV Cream |
| Sensitive | Redness, irritation, heat rash | Gentle cleanser + Anti UV Cream |
| All skin types | Sun protection (non-negotiable) | Anti UV Cream — every single morning |
Common Summer Skincare Mistakes I See in My Clinic
Seasons change and your skin's needs change with them. What worked in December will cause problems in June.
Washing more than twice a day strips the skin barrier, triggering more oil production and more breakouts — the opposite of what you want.
Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate through cloud cover. Apply the Anti UV Cream every single morning regardless of whether the sun is visible.
Physical scrubs are too harsh for already-stressed summer skin. Switch to gentle chemical exfoliants like AHA toner used once or twice a week.
Foundation is not sunscreen. Always apply SPF before any makeup — every day, without exception.
Weekly Additions to Your Summer Routine
Exfoliation
1–2 times per week. Use a gentle AHA (glycolic or lactic acid) exfoliant. Do not exfoliate more than twice — over-exfoliation damages your barrier.
Clay Mask
Once per week for oily skin. Kaolin or bentonite clay draws out deep-seated impurities. Leave on for 10 minutes maximum.
Hydrating Mask
Once per week, all skin types. A hyaluronic acid or aloe vera sheet mask after sun exposure replenishes and soothes heat-stressed skin.
No topical routine can fully compensate for dehydration from the inside. I recommend a minimum of 2.5 to 3 litres of water daily during summer months. Foods rich in antioxidants — tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, green tea — support your skin's defence against UV damage from the inside out. Your summer skincare is only as effective as your overall hydration and nutrition.
